Broadcast advertising has traditionally been a highly effective way of reaching large numbers of people at once. Even with the advent of the Internet, television and radio advertising is still a great tool to use in your marketing efforts. For the small business owner, broadcast advertising can be costly in terms of total dollars spent, but the cost to reach each prospective customer is often lower than other methods of advertising. It can also be somewhat intimidating to decipher jargon such as CPP, CPM, ratings points, and dayparts. For the purpose of simplicity, I always ask all media reps to provide a CPM, or cost per thousand (more on this later), so I can easily compare advertising costs across all advertising media.I’ll outline the pros and cons of buying broadcast media, as well as explain some of the terminology commonly used by media salespeople.ProsThe ability to reach large numbers of people at a time, while targeting who you want to reach by advertising in specific programs. For example, advertising beer during the Super Bowl. Also, having your own television or radio ad often creates a perception of credibility.ConsCan be expensive, especially when adding in the cost of producing your commercial. In the case of TV, it is difficult to make immediate changes to your ad.TerminologyCPM – Cost Per ThousandRefers to how much it costs to reach a thousand people in a given area or “market”. Cost per thousand is not affected by the size of the market.CPP – Cost Per PointThe cost to reach one rating “point”, which represents a percentage of TV viewers or radio listeners in a market. The value of a rating point is affected by the size of the market, e.g., 1% of the viewing audience in Los Angeles is greater than that of Providence, Rhode Island.Reach – The number of unduplicated households or people exposed to an ad.Frequency – The number of times a household or person is exposed to an ad.Daypart – A programming time period, such as television primetime (8-10pm).Obviously, I’ve just touched on the basics of buying television and/or radio advertising. I plan to address specific advertising topics for the small business owner in future articles.

However, it is a challenge you gladly take on so you can reap the benefits of obtaining a better quality of life. Use these three success tips to help you build a business that will generate the income you want and give you the personal freedom to enjoy it.Build a Mailing ListA mailing list is vital for building a home internet business. A mailing list allows you to stay in contact with your customers as well as promote your company. Because the people on your mailing list have already expressed interest in you by signing up, they will be more receptive to your sales message as long as you don’t abuse the privilege.A good way to build up your mailing list is to give away something for free, such as an informative ebook or access to a web course, in exchange for their email address. Another way to generate a mailing list is to create a newsletter filled with information relevant to your target market. Whatever you do, don’t spam the people on your mailing list. You will alienate your customers and destroy the reputation of your home internet business.Use Social MediaSocial media is an excellent tool for building a home based internet business. The sales landscape has changed drastically. Customers have become resistant to old sales methods, such as broadcast advertising. The only way to reach consumers is to engage in one on one conversation with them about their needs.Social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook help you connect with your customers on a personal level. However, remember social media is about talking to your customers. Don’t use your social networking profile like a microphone and constantly belt out your sales message. Use it to get to know your customers better and how your home internet business can help them solve their problems.Talk to Experienced EntrepreneursThe best way to learn how to build a profitable home based internet business is to sit at the feet of people who have already done it. Listening to the successes and failures of entrepreneurs who have gone before is a worthwhile education that can help you navigate the rocky waters of business ownership. You can find tons of blogs by entrepreneurs online that detail their struggle to build a home internet business. They also hang out in business forums helping other entrepreneurs and you can often find them on the same social media sites you use to connect with your customers. Don’t be afraid to pick their brain for useful information. Who knows, a minor tip could make you millions.Building a home internet business is a challenging task. But with passion, persistence and discipline, you can build a business that will give you the financial freedom to have the life you’ve always wanted.

Continue Reading »People are mostly an optimistic lot. Small business people tend to be even more than the norm. When we set up an advertising plan we want it to work and we really believe that it will.So we spend the money on the ad campaign, signs on our trucks, mailers or whatever and breathlessly wait for the rush of new customers. We wait one day, maybe two then we start to question whether or not we made the right choice. Did we execute the plan, if we even have a plan, correctly?Maybe we should have tried this other idea. Lets shift our marketing over to this other plan, maybe it will work better. That is when we need to walk over to the nearest wall and bang our head a couple times. Or maybe have our spouse give us a quick kick in the keister. Advertising is not about hitting the proverbial home run. For any advertising that a small business can afford to succeed, it needs to have time to work. That doesn’t mean throwing good money down a hole of no return, but it does mean having a well thought out and timed marketing plan. Big businesses can afford to throw millions into campaigns designed for instant return. Ads that are broadcast repeatedly during prime time television, ads during the super bowl, sponsoring major civic events are all examples. A small business just can’t afford that cost. So, for us, advertising does not work overnight! To have a successful campaign you need to have consistency. Your potential client may not need your product or service the first time that they see your ad. They might not even the second time. But maybe they will the third time. When you advertise a certain amount should be considered as establishing the base for your campaign. That means getting your name out there in the back of peoples minds so when they do need your service or product, they think of you and they know where to find you.If you hop around every week with a different ad in a paper, or change your signs, or stop sending out mailers, when your customer is ready to come to you, they might not be able to find you.

One of the biggest hurdles in promoting your home based business is the initial hesitation of the prospect to even look at your program.A lot of people have heard from their friends, that almost anything online claiming to make money is a scam. There is some truth to that claim, but there are also a lot of legitimate businesses online where everyday people are “firing their bosses” and leaving the rat race behind. One of those opportunities is starting a home based business online. There’s one source of potential prospects that is rarely used in the home based business industry.MLM Genealogy Leads.Utilizing MLM genealogy leads is a smart move because the prospect has already shown a willingness to buy into the idea of working from home. As I mentioned previously, that is one of the biggest hurdles. I mean, trying to convince a prospect that your home business is legitimate, then having to sell them on your particular company can be a daunting task. Now you may ask how would you go about finding MLM genealogy leads and when you’ve found a list, how would you go about contacting them? I’ve used these leads for quite some time and I can tell you this, the way I use to get a hold of people with genealogy leads was no walk in the park. That’s until I found another way.Phone broadcasting. Being able to load 1000-5000 MLM genealogy leads in a phone broadcasting system where people can be contacted within minutes to hear about your opportunity is a heckuva time saver. The people that respond back are the truly serious prospects who actually want to hear more about your business.Sure with MLM genealogy leads there will be phone numbers that are no longer in service, phone numbers that are probably on the DO NOT CALL list, and people who have been scarred by their ex-MLM companies. But again, you won’t have to call them one by one, just let the phone broadcasting system do it’s work. After all, we live in the information age now. Work smart, not hard.
Continue Reading »If I am to assume that you are among the small to medium-size business or service owners contemplating an advertising run on TV, then your timing couldn’t be better. With advertising revenues down everywhere, the time to get the best deals is right now. In fact, revenues are down because mainstream advertisers are reducing their exposure time, giving you the perfect opportunity to aggressively gain recognition while your competition scales back.If you are also thinking that you couldn’t possibly afford the expensive major broadcasting stations during prime-time, then you’re thinking is sound. Now is the perfect time to concentrate your budget on the more reasonably priced cable offerings, where you will have the opportunity to take full advantage of all television’s benefits without sacrificing any of its “show business” appeal. With cable, you can target your audience with your selection of quality programming during the popular viewing hours (prime time), choose your geographic areas for viewership, and create the image you’ve always wanted to create without having to mortgage the farm to do it. But no matter how enticing it is to put your business on TV, you never want to do it to the exclusion of other media that should be part of your advertising mix.TV continues to be this country’s most popular media pastime. The average person is reported to watch at least 7 hours a day, and that may be even higher now that telecommuting has become so popular. Most families I know have at least 2 sets in their homes, and some even more. Remember that cable isn’t free, so those subscribers usually have a higher income than those who do not, and statistically, sit and watch programming more. In fact, more than half of all American homes subscribe to a package deal on cable TV, and that’s good news for you. When you consider planning your budget, you’ll probably take into account that producing and airing a TV commercial is very expensive, and plan accordingly. Actually, nothing is further from the truth. If planned correctly, producing a TV spot of some substance is relatively inexpensive and so too are the cable airtime charges. Extras like a jingle of your own and hiring a known spokesperson, although fairly reasonable, can add to the costs. However, if they are not absolutely essential, you can stick with the basic packages and keep the whole experience quite reasonable and still capable of delivering surprisingly rewarding results. So if you’re up to the task, have the money in your advertising budget, think that broadcast (including radio) will help your bottom line, go for it. You’ll find it to be one of the most fun things you’ve ever done in business, or rather to say, “show business”.
